Lot 359.  Mesopotamia, Edessa. Elagabalus. A.D. 218-222. Æ.

Mesopotamia, Edessa. Elagabalus. A.D. 218-222. Æ (26 mm, 13.80 g, 12 h). Laureate and cuirassed bust of Elagabalus left, holding spear over far shoulder and shield on arm / Tyche seated left on rocks, holding fruit; in left field, Marsyas standing right atop low column, holding wineskin over shoulder and extending arm towards Tyche; below, river-god swimming right. Cf. Mionnet Suppl. VIII, 26. Brown patina, light porosity. Very fine.

Mionnet is apparently the only reference noting an example of this type with Marsyas atop a column.
