Description

India, Northern India. Ca. 500 B.C. AR 1/4 karshapana (13 mm, .99 g). Archaic punchmarked coin. Single punch of a triangle symbol with lines emanating from the 3 sides / Blank. MACW 4083; Rajgor Series 79; Hardaker UN1. Missing from most collections. Extremely rare.

This unattributed janapada is known from only one hoard, the Lucknow Hoard, that was recorded by P.L. Gupta in 1962. Mitchiner tentatively attributed this to Avanti janapada of central India. But Terry Hardaker in his new book, Punchmarked Coinage of the Indian Subcontinent (2019), has listed this RR type as an "unattributed coin from the Ganga region" (p. 283).  The single punch, the geometric symbol, and the scyphate shape indicate this was one of the earliest punchmarked coins issued in north India. Listed as VR (Very Rare) by Rajgor.
