FRANCE, Louis XVIII. 1814-W. Gold 20 Francs (6.41 gm; 21 mm). Lille mint. Obv: portrait of the king facing right, lettering "LOUIS XVIII ROI DES FRANCE" around, Rev: a crowned shield with three fleur-des-lis in it, all within a laurel wreath, denomination, lettering, date, and mint mark 'W' around. KM 706.6; Gad 1026. Struck during the exile of Louis XVIII in London. It is said that these fascinating issues were minted, for the most part, to fund British troops in France. After Napoleon was defeated in Waterloo, Louis reclaimed his throne. Choice UNC.
