Description

THRACE. Hadrianopolis. Gordian III. 238-244 AD. Æ 26mm (9.20 g). AVT K M AN-T ΓOPΔIANOC AVΓ, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / AΔPIANOΠO&OLambda;EITΩN, city gate with central arch way and a partially closed doors, four pinnacles and five arches on wall, two towers flanking. Youroukova 522 (V236/R508=R579); Varbanov 3763 (same dies). Near VF, dark brown and green patina, rough surfaces.

Yourokova dies R508 and R579 appear to be the same dies, but coin used for the illustration of R508 is double struck and difficult to see the details. The details can be seen clearer in the illustration for R579. Varbanov illustrates a coin from the same pair of dies as this coin, though incorrectly cross references it to Yourokova 597 which is struck from a different obverse die.
