Description

SATRAPS of CARIA. Maussollos. 377/6-353/2 BC. AR Tetradrachm (21mm - 14.78 g). Laureate head of Apollo facing, slightly right / Zeus Labraundos standing right, holding double axe (labrys) and lotus-tipped sceptre; ME monogram behind. SNG von Aulock 2358; Kraay-Hirmer 638. EF/Good VF. Stunning obverse die, perhaps the finest in the series.

This coin comes from a collection put together in the early 80's. There are some very fine scratches on the left cheek which are barely visible without a glass (I've taken the photo to enhance them so there is no question as to what I'm referring to), perhaps from a slightly aggressive cleaning or perhaps some very minor smoothing. Without these scratches, this is a $5000+ coin.
