Lot 705.  Menander I. Ca. 165/55-130 B.C. AR drachm (16 mm, 2.18 g, 12 h). BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΣΩTHPOΣ MENANΔPOY, helmeted and draped bust of Athena right / Owl standing right, head facing; monogram to inner right; Kharoshthi legend around: Maharajasa tratarasa Menamdrasa. Bopearachchi 2C; MIG 213a; HGC 12, 183. Rare type. Tiny edge chip. Nice old collection toning, great style and high relief. Choice nearly extremely fine.

The owl reverse appears to have been Menander’s earliest coinage.
