Lot 417.  India, Eran city state. Ca. 2nd century B.C. Æ karshapana (18 mm, 4.83 g). Five punches: elephant walking right, indradhvaja, tree-in-railing, taurine symbol and river / Blank. Pieper 461. A scarce and superb specimen with bold punches.

The Eran-Vidisha region is the source of a distinctive series of punchmarked copper coins. This attractive coinage of eastern Malwa developed after the collapse of the Mauryan empire when political control devolved to local rulers.
