Lot 498.  India, Gupta empire. Skandagupta. ruled Ca. A.D. 455-480. AR drachm (14 mm, 2.00 g). King's bust facing right, with traces of date to right / Fan-tailed peacock facing with wings spread, with Brahmi legend around: Vijita vanir avanipati jayati divam Skandaguptoyam. MAC 4883-4884. A wonderful portrait struck on a full flan with complete legends on reverse. RR and choice.

This is the rare Madhyadesa type of portrait silver coins, issued by the Gupta emperors in the core imperial territory of modern-day Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
