Description

India, Mewar kingdom. Rana Sanga. 1484-1527. Æ quarter falus (14 mm, 2.03 g). Nagari legend Sri Ra(na)/ Sangrama / garbled Arabic legend. G&G M266. This quarter denomination is very hard to find. It is rated as RR (Very Rare) by Goron & Goenka. Very rare.

The great hero of the Rajputs, Rana Sanga, led the Rajput confederacy against the Mughal invader Babur at the Battle of Khanua in 1527. At a crucial point in the 10-hour long battle, the Rana was wounded and knocked unconscious on his horse, leading to a panic in the Rajput army. This turned the tide in the favour of the Mughals and gave the fledgling Mughal empire a strong foothold in north India.  Rana Sanga died shortly afterwards.
