While the identities of most magistrates found on the coins of Thebes remain obscure, the magistrate on this coin has been identified as the historical Epaminondas (see "Epaminondas' Coinage," Proceedings of the 10th International Congress of Numismatics [London, 1986], p. 35-40). Epaminondas was the Theban general (Boiotarch) who destroyed Spartan supremacy at the Battle of Leuktra on 6 July 371, thus redefining the political landscape of Greece.
