CONSTANTINE I. 307-337 AD. Æ Follis (18mm - 2.12 g). Nicomedia mint. Struck 324-325 AD. Laureate head right / CONSTAN / TINVS / AVG, legend in three lines, wreath above; SMND. RIC VII 98 (unlisted officina). VF, brown patina, minor roughness. Very rare, the rarest mint for the anepigraphic series.
Although this anepigraphic series was issued from several mints in bronze, at Nicomedia, there is only an unique example from officina B cited in Vienna, Bundessammlung von Münzen und Medaillen, Kunsthist Museum. It is also for Constantine I and no other issuer was known at the time RIC VII was written in 1966. The anepigraphic issues are usually seen from Antioch, Trier and Rome and occasionally from Cyzicus and Thessalonica, but this is the first example this cataloger has seen from Nicomedia. Very rare and a unique opportunity.
