Description

SYRIA, Cyrrhestica. Hierapolis-Bambyce, ca. 301-281 B.C. AR 1/24 Shekel (0.60 g, 9.6 mm). Head of Artagatis right, wearing tiara / Artagatis seated left on throne, wearing long dress tied by a belt; holding long scepter and wreath (?). Monogram of Hieropolis above, SE behind throne, DI at feet. Seyrig 14; Hoover HSC 1354 corr. Extremely rare; perhaps no more than a few known. This coin has Greek inscriptions, the rest of the small series is written in Aramaic. Hoover suggests that this coin may have been struck under Seleukos I, the first Seleukid king.
