Description
PAMPHYLIA. Perga. Aurelian. 270-275 AD. Æ 10 Assaria (27mm - 14.06 g). Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind; I before / Cult statue of Artemis of Perga, flanked by star and crescent, within distyle temple; D in pediment. SNG France 616 (same obverse die). VF, dark grayish-green patina with some earthen highlights. Rare.
By the time of Aurelian, the minting of provincial bronzes had all but ceased outside of Alexandria, being limited to a handful of mints in Pisidia and Pamphylia. Under Aurelian's successor Tacitus, almost 300 years of the minting of provincial bronze coinages comes to an end with a final issue from Perga.
