ZEUGITANIA, Carthage. The Libyan Revolt, 241-238 BC. AR Shekel (7.95 gm). Head of Herakles wearing a lion skin headdress / Lion prowling, punic M (= meacanat - of the camp) above. MAA.53. Carradice & LaNiece.1. Toned XF. Very Rare. Exceptional high grade and good metal quality for this normally very base issue. ex Monsierur Note collection (1910-1982, France). Following their defeat defeat in the First Punic War in 241, Rome placed crippling peace terms on Carthage. By the time of this issue, they were hard pressed to raise money to pay their mercenary army, which revolted. The citizens of Libya joined the rebels. These coins were issued by the rebels during the time of the revolt. Ultimately the revolt was put down most cruelly by Hamicar Barca.
