Description

Germanicus. Died A.D. 19. Æ as (27 mm, 10.57 g, 7 h). Rome, under Gaius Caligula, A.D. 37/8. GERMANICVS CAESAR TI AVGVST F DIVI AVG N, bare head of Germanicus left; c/m: TI·CÆ(?) IMP(?) in rectangular incuse / C CAESAR AVG GERMANICVS PON M TR POT around large S C. RIC 35; BMC 49; Cohen 1. Brown patina. The countermark a little encrusted (could be cleaned) and only fine due to strike, the coin nearly very fine.

Martini notes that the TI·CÆ countermark is common, and was applied during the Flavian period to coins circulating in the areas of Moesia and Thrace. The countermark on this coin seems to have additional letters under the dirt encrustation, and might read IMP. If so, then it seems that it is a new countermark. Another example seemingly the same was sold by CNG several years ago, http://cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=60556, also on an as of Germanicus.
