Description

Germany, Kreta, World War II, The Aerial Invasion of Crete, commanded by General Kurt Student, white metal medal of Karl Goetz, 1941, made by Bayer Hauptmunzamt (inscribed on rim), 60mm. cf. Kienast 587; Gorny and Mosch 192, October 2010, lot 3551 (same type). Spotting otherwise about Extremely Fine. An interesting strike from the Bavarian Mint. Ex Dimitris Loulakakis collection. The scene portrays one of the greatest aerial invasions in history. Many historians argue that the delay of the Third Reich in Crete played an important role in the invasion of Russia as the heavy winter hindered their chances of conquest.
