Description

Greece, George I (1863-1913), countermarked 10 lepta 1882, LE PICOTIN APERITIF. Le Picotin Aperitif was a French liquor made by the Rousseau family located in the suburbs of Paris and had their warehouse at 16 Rue Quincampoix. This countermark is found most often on English and Italian coins as they were the most easy to source at the time. The company had to use foreign coins as it was strictly forbidden by French law to mutilate French money and could have been fined.
