Description

Egypt, 18th Dynasty. Pharoah Thutmose III. 1479-1425 B.C. Carved steatite scarab. A finely detailed and carved steatite scarab measuring 18 mm in length. On the base is inscribed 'Amen Tat Mer', or 'of the Substance of Amen, Beloved'. Precise dating of the scarabs of Thutmose III have their own difficulty as they were made and used long after his death, but probably not much more than a generation or so. Cf. Flinders Petrie, Scarabs and Cylinders, pl. 27, 30; cf. F. Matouk, Corpus du Scarabee Egyptien, pp. 184-5. Ex Alex G. Malloy, with his ticket. .
