Description
SASANIAN KINGS; Kavad I, 488-496 AD. Æ Drachm (3.52 gm; 28 mm). Obverse, Kavad figure turning right, crescent and star on 3, 6 and 9 o'clock, reverse; figure turning right with raised hand, text around the image is deteriorated and not fully recognizable however the phrase based on extensive study made by Mochiri is "ShTLYWL" (Shahrewar), the text on the outer ring begins at 2 o'clock moving counter clockwise: "KW'TY" (Kavad) followed by "PL'HWYN,YTN"(fraxwenitar-meaning enlarge and make prosper), the overall meaning of the entire phrase on the reverse is : "Kavad's Best Rule shall bring prosperity". Mochiri makes an argument that it is possible this series of Kavad coinage were in celebration of Mazdakites obliteration and destruction by his son Khosrau I. See book "Proceeding of third European Conference of Iranian Studies-Part 1 and the Article by M.I Mochiri. Choice Good VF / VF. Lovely strike on a nice broad flan. Extremely Rare.
