Description
ILKHANS of PERSIA, Hulagu, 1256-1265 AD. Natanz mint. AR Dirhem (2.87 gm; 22 mm). obverse, "Munaka qa'an/ Hulagu Khan/ Padshah dar/ zamin/ al-A'zam" (Hulagu great king on earth), reverse at the center "Ahmad/Ishaq/zarb-e Natanz"(name: Ahmad Ishaq, minted in Natanz), outer ring Shahadah and Shahdah for Prophet Mohammad. Extremely rare variation of Hulagu's coinage from an unrecorded mint city of Natanz (near present day Isfahan). Ilkhanid grand vizir Zain al-Din Mastari, created a major monument dedicated to his Sufi teacher Sheikh Abd-Al-Samad in Natanz. Another interesting variation is the coin's description of the king's title is in Persian and not standard Arabic. Not in Omer Diler's monumental reference, thus Extremely rare. Some minor weakness, otherwise well struck. Choice Good VF.
