SASANIAN KINGS, Khosrau II, 590-628 AD. AR Drachm (4.11 gm; 32 mm). Extremely Interesting Issue! mint NAYZ (NAYRIZ?) OR NShYZ year 35. Bust right, wearing mural crown with frontal crescent, two wings, and star-in-crescent, ribbons and crescents on shoulders; stars flanking crown; double border, star-in-crescents in margin / Fire altar with ribbons; flanked by two attendants; star and crescent flanking flames; triple border, star-in-crescents in margin. Göbl type II/3; Mochiri 275; Paruck -; Saeedi -; Sunrise 978. This issue of Khosrau II is a valuable piece as to the history of this coinage toward the end of the reign. The mint seems to be unknown (as far as one can interpret the letters), the style is also not refined as those from the standard known mints. It is not possible to state if this drachm was issued on an emergency basis without an official model or could have possibly been minted during the Arab-Sasanian period of war and conquest where the region changed hands. Sharply struck on a full flan. Choice FDC. Lightly toned. Fully lustrous. Rare.
