Description
China: Sinkiang (Xinjiang), Qing Dynasty, Zhungar Khanate, Tsewan Arabtan (1697-1727), Yarkand mint. AE Pul coin, Issued by native Khans, 1700-45. (8.46gm, 19mm), Near Extremely Fine. In 1759, the Chinese conquered the Xinjiang region In the south, in place of the native pul coins, they introduced Chinese style coins. However, although these coins had the square hole of normal cash, they were made of pure copper (hence their name of hong qian, red cash). At first they weighed 2 qian, and had the mint name on the reverse in Manchu and Turkic script (a local version of Arabic). In the north, the coins were meant to follow normal regulations, but the difficulty of obtaining zinc led to an alloy of a different composition being used After the death of Qianlong, his successor Jiaging issued an Edict ordaining that 20% of Xin-jiang coins should in future bear the name of his Deceased Father Qianlong to commemorate his conquest of the region. This was obeyed, on and off, until the end of the dynasty, so that many coins with the Qianlong period title are, in fact. posthumous issues which can be assigned to their correct period on stylistic grounds Rebellion by the Moslem natives was a constant threat to Chinese rule. Some rebels issued their own coins for a while, using Arabic as well as Chinese patterns.
