Description
SASANIAN KINGS, Peruz. second Crown. AD. 457/9-484. AR Drachm (3.98 gm; 27 mm). Obverse bust right, wearing mural crown with frontal crescent, korymbos set on crescent, / Fire altar with ribbons; flanked by two attendants in prayer type. mint: SM (Samarqand?). If SM, then it is Extremely rare mint for the entire Sasanian period. SNS type I/1a (pl. 78, 18); Gobl type I/1; Paruck -; Saeedi -; Sunrise 938var. Comparison between the letters and mint abbreviation of ST for Istaxr and SM (Samarqand?) is very clear if the two are compared. This mint is SM and not ST. Also crude provincial style of portrait is another reason to believe, this dirham was not minted in the spiritual capital of Sasanian Empire Istaxr. For notation on Samarqand, see Sellwood-Sasanian Coinage. Choice EF. Lightly toned with some luster. Extremely rare mint for the entire Sasanian period.
