Description
BYZANTINE EMPIRE, Circa 10th-12th. Century AD. Bronze balance Weight (26.64 gm; 23mm x 21mm x 5mm). The square weight features a Christian cross and the Greek letters Γ (Gamma) and A (Alpha)=One Ounce weight, inlaid with silver. This square weight was produced in the Eastern Mediterranean as a tool of the large amount of trade occurring in the region. They were used with handheld, small balances (scales) to check the weight of coins, notably the gold solidus, ensuring they were not light or clipped. The weight is square with the denominational mark for 1 ounce (Γ-A) and two circles outside a radiant cross. These weights were used for precise measurements in commercial transactions during the Byzantine Empire. Nice original green patina. Excellent condition.
