BYZANTINE EMPIRE. John II Comnenus, (AD. 1118-1143). AV hyperpyron (4.10 gm; 31 mm). Thessalonica, 1137-1143. Barred IC - XC, Christ Pantocrator seated facing on backless throne, with cruciform nimbus, wearing pallium and colobium, raising right hand in benediction, holding book of Gospels cradled in left arm / Facing full-length figures of John, on left, wearing crown and loros, holding labarum in right hand and akakia in left, and the Virgin Mary, nimbate, wearing pallium and maphorium, reaching up with right hand to bless John; MO between heads. Sear 1948; DOC 5; Hendy pl. 9, 11; Berk 347. Well centered. Nicely struck. Choice EF.
