TABERISTAN. Umar ibn A’ala,(771-782 AD). AR Hemidrachm (1.96 gm; 24 mm). Type 3 - Rarest of all 4 types, Obverse: Sasanian bust to the right, name Umar in Kufic Arabic in front of the face, Pahlavi phrase APD on 2nd quarter and phrase ARS (Arus-Admired) or Arun (type 2 which is the typical type comes with phrase NYWK) in Pahlavi on 3rd quarter. Reverse; fire altar with attendants, mint TPURSTAN (Tabaristan) on the right, date: 128. Extremely rare type. Choice EF. Lightly toned.
