Description
SASANIAN KINGS. Peroz, 2nd crown, AD. 457/9-484. AR Drachm (4.07 gm; 30 mm). Standard issue, obverse, Peroz bust turning right, overstrike letters of "MR" at 6 o'clock, reverse, fire altar with attendants in prayer mode, mint abbreviation "MR" for Marv on the right, degenrated letters for king's name on the left. MR or possibly "M(A)R" more than likely identifies number 100 in counting since mint abbreviation is already on the reverse. For reference see Borhān-e qāte of ibn-Khalaf-e Tabrizi, Encyclopeadia Iranica as well as Farahvashi's Pahlavi Lexicon. Peroz had to pay large amount of ransom to Hephtalites thus his era was a period of massive silver, debased silver and lead coinage. Another theory will be the mint mark is GW for Gorgan and then this coin was re-stamped in Marv with appropriate mint name abbreviation. Choice VF. Lightly toned. Extremely rare.
