Description
SASANIAN KINGS, Peroz, 3rd crown, 457/9-484 AD. AR Drachm (3.98 gm; 29 mm). Obverse, "Faravahar" symbol on the third quarter, reverse, mint RD (Ray) on the right, king's name in blundred letters on the left. We have examples of faravahr symbol appearing on Kavad I drachms as well. Both period saw excessive amount of minting of drachms based on political and military issues related to war with Hephtalites and ransoms in its outcome. It is difficult to ascertain if these markings have anything to do with the ransom moneys paid to Hephtalites but it certainly requires research. Choice VF. Toned. Rare.
