Description
SASANIAN KINGS; Yazdgird II, (438-457 AD). PB (Lead) Unit (1.83 gm; 17 mm). Obverse, Yazdgird's bust turning right, two large dots in front of face, reverse, fire altar with attendants shown inside a structure with crescent at the top. Typically With exception of Persis coinage showing the Ka'ba Zardosht(Zoroaster) in Naqsh-e Rostam, and Parthian AE showing fortifications, there are no traces of architecture in the Coinage of Pre-Islamic Persia. Specially within the Sasanian coinage, there are no references to architectural structure. It can not be proven that this reverse intended to show a temple like structure or simply a frame around the fire altar. However it remains of highest rarity among the reverses of Sasanian AEs. Choice aEF. Nice original find patina. Of highest rarity.
