Description
CHAGANIYAN; Northern Tokharistan region. Late 6th-7th centuries. AR Drachm (2.47 gm; 25 mm). Obverse, Sasanian-style bust imitating Khosrau I, Psuedo Pahlavi legend (letter "R" visible) in front of face, heavily counter marked in Bactrian language around the top and another counter mark with human head at 6 oclock, reverse, Fire altar with attendants imitating the style of Khosrau I's attendants, mint mark AM(?) for Amol (major trade area south of Caspian Sea) or SM(?-possible Samarkand as a component of the original city of Afrasiab? well in the Chaganian territory), year obliterated but the traces might show "33"?. Choice aEF. Nice old toning. Rare.
