Description

A beautiful Maya Swimmer bowl from El Tazumal - Chalchuapa, El Salvador, c. 550 - 900 AD. This flat-bottom example has a 6-1/2" diameter and is 4" deep. In addition to the two elaborately detailed Underworld figures, there is a series of nicely detailed Copador glyphs adorning the rim. The theme of this type of vessel relates to the story in Maya mythology recounting the journey of the Hero Twins Hunahpu and Xbalanque through Xibalba, the Maya Underworld. Ex Tribal Treasures Gallery. Value range: $650 - $800

Cf. Peter Schmidt "Maya", page 646.
