Description

Macedonian Kingdom. Alexander III 'the Great'. 336-323 B.C. AR tetradrachm (24 mm, 16.89 g, 10 h). Odessos, ca. 280-200 B.C. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin headdress / [Α]ΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ, Zeus seated left, holding eagle and scepter; in left field, OΔ monogram. Price -; Topalov 23; Hersh -. Unpublished variety. Obverse a touch off center, a few light marks. Good very fine / very fine.

While Topalov lists the general type in his catalogue, the specific variety with only OΔ monogram is unrecorded in either Price or Hersh. There are several staters with the OΔ monogram located in various positions by itself, but all of the tetradrachms recorded by Price have a secondary control of either letters, monograms and/or symbols.
