Description

Thrace, Abdera. Ca. 395-360 B.C. AR tetrobol (16 mm, 2.78 g, 10 h). Protes, magistrate. ΑΒΔ, griffin springing left / Three grain ears within linear square; around on three sides, magistrate's name: ΑΠΙ ΠΡΩ-ΤΕΩ. May grp. CVIII, 362 (A261/P301); AMNG II 124; SNG Lockett 1141 (same obv. die); McClean 4021 (same dies). Very light golden toning around the griffin. Some striking weakness on highest points, otherwise extremely fine.

Purchased by the previous owner from Herakles Numismatics at the San Francisco World Fair of Money, 30 July 2005.
