Description
Islands off Thrace, Thasos. Ca. 480-463 B.C. AR stater (23 mm, 7.82 g). Satyr advancing right, carrying protesting nymph / Quadripartite incuse square. Le Rider 5; SNG Copenhagen 1010-1. Toned. Very fine.
Thasos was an economic powerhouse thanks to its exploitation of mines on the island and on the Thracian mainland which produced somewhere in the neighborhood of 200-300 talents per year. Its coinage circulated widely on the Thracian mainland and influenced the development of some local issues, most notably those attributed to 'Lete.'
