This coinage was struck around a decisive point in the history of Tanagra. In 457 B.C., the entire army of the Athenian empire faced a large Spartan force at Tanagra and despite heavy losses, the Spartans were victorious. Unfortunately, two months later the Athenians regrouped and returned to defeat the Spartans at Oinophyta. As a result, all of Boiotia fell into Athenian hands and Tanagra had its defensive walls razed to the ground.
