Description

Euboia, Chalkis. Ca. 290-273/1 B.C. AR drachm (16 mm, 3.52 g, 9 h). Head of the nymph Chalkis right / X-AΛ, eagle flying right, grappling with a serpent; below, trophy. Picard 26; BCD Euboia 171; SNG Copenhagen 436. Toned, minor porosity. Very fine.

Chalkis was an important city on Euboia that controlled one of the few easy crossing points between northern and central Greece. For this reason it was considered one of the ""fetters of Greece"" during its occupation by the forces of the Macedonian kings. This coinage was struck while the city was in the hands of Demetrios I Poliorketes or Antigonos II Gonatas and before it appears to have revolted against it Macedonian garrison in 274/3 B.C.
