Description
Attica, Athens. Ca. 353-294 B.C. AR tritemorion (8 mm, 0.46 g, 9 h). Helmeted head of Athena right / A/EΘ in two lines framed by three crescents. Kroll 21b; SNG Copenhagen 57-8. Toned. Very fine.
By the time that this coinage was struck the great glory days of the Athenian Empire were far in the past. In the second half of the fourth century and the early third century B.C., Athens struggled to survive in the face of Macedonian domination, first in the form of Philip II and continuing through Alexander the great and his early successors. The types look back to the earlier Athenian coin models of happier times and the three crescents indicate the denomination.
