Description

Argolis, Halieis. Under the Tirynthians. Ca. 350-330 B.C. Æ chalkous (12 mm, 2.16 g, 11 h). Laureate head of Apollo right / T-IP, palm tree. Halieis 1, 255-61; Svoronos 12; BCD Peloponnesos 1284. Extremely rare. Brown patina, light porosity. Nearly very fine.

Around 460 B.C. the town of Halieis was given to the Tirynthians who had been expelled from their original home by the Argives. The town was later abandoned in the early 3rd century B.C. Recent excavations at Halieis have uncovered the remains of a mint, along with unstruck bronze planchets and hitherto unknown bronze coins depicted a bearded head facing to the right on the obverse, and either Є or E within wreath on the reverse. The coinage from the mint under the Tirynthians is extremely rare.
