Description

Like many cities of Crete, Itanos was renowned for its archers, who served as mercenaries in the many armies of the Hellenistic age. The head of Athena on this issue is copied from the late coinage of Athens brought back as payment by mercenaries probably returning from campaigning in mainland Greece.
