Description
Lydia, Sardes. Ca. 133 B.C.-A.D. 14 Æ (14 mm, 3.45 g, 1 h). Head of youthful Herakles right, wearing lion's skin headdress / ΣAPΔI-ANΩN, kantharos; in lower right field, monogram. Cf. Johnston 228-30; SNG Copenhagen -. Dark green patina. Very fine.
The types on this coin refer to the myth of Omphale, the queen of Lydia, who owned Herakles as a slave for three years. The great hero was forced to endure this servitude to expiate his blood guilt for murdering Iphitos in a drunken rage.
