Caria, Mylasa. Mid 6th century B.C. EL 1/48 stater (5 mm, 0.28 g, 6 h). Lion's head facing / Scorpion within incuse square. Weidauer 166-7; SNG Keckman 918; SNG Kayhan 925-7. Good very fine.

A remarkable early Carian electrum issue struck at Mylasa perhaps under the Persian administration. Mylasa and Caria were absorbed into the Persian empire with the defeat of Kroisos and the fall of the Lydian Empire in 547 B.C., and this coin was probably struck not long before or after this epoch-making event which brought the Persians into direct contact with the Greek cities of western Asia Minor.
