Description

Cilicia, Soloi. Ca. 100-30 B.C. Æ (20 mm, 5.03 g, 1 h). Draped bust of Artemis right, bow and quiver at shoulder / ΣΟΛΕΩΝ, Athena advancing right, brandishing thunderbolt and holding forth shield. Cf. SNG BN 1190 (control on rev.); SNG Levante 859. Pleasing sandy-green and brown patina. Nice very fine.

The obverse of this coin has a very unusual border, with half being pelleted as normal, the other half being three parallel rings. It is difficult to discern, but it seems the parallel rings were created in the flan manufacturing process and then were not obliterated when the coin was struck. Whatever the truth of the matter, the obverse presents an unusual departure from what is normally seen.
