Seleukid Kingdom. Seleukos II Kallinikos. 246-226 B.C. AR tetradrachm (29 mm, 15.62 g, 2 h). Uncertain mint 40, probably in Commagene. Diademed head of Seleukos II right / [Β]ΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΣΕ-ΛΕΥΚΟΥ, Apollo Delphios standing left, testing arrow and resting elbow on tall tripod behind; in outer left field, NA. SC 727.1; HGC 9, 303y (r1). Rare. Old toning, a little rough. Very fine.
From an American Collection of Biblical and Related Coinage.
Houghton and Lorber note that all tetradrachms from this series were struck by a single obverse die that soon deteriorated. Here, the die-break at the back of the neck just below the hair has only shortly begun, appearing as a slight bulge. It developed substantially from there. The die was then recut for further use, but oddly the die-break was not filled and recut.
