Description

Phoenicia, Tyre. 126 B.C.-A.D 65 AR 1/2 shekel (20 mm, 6.62 g, 12 h). CY 140 (A.D. 14/5). Laureate bust of Melkart right, lion's skin tied at neck / TYPIOY IEPAΣ KAI AΣYΛOY, eagle standing left on prow, palm on right wing; in left field, date (PM) above club; in right field, monogram; between eagle's legs, Phoenician beth. Cf. DCA Suppl. 530 (KP in right field), otherwise unpublished. Seemingly unpublished without the KP to the right of the eagle. Surfaces a little rough, but otherwise very fine.

A Biblical coin struck during the lifetime of Jesus. The half-shekel was the amount of the Temple Tax.
