Description

Judaea, Herodian Kingdom. Herod II Archelaus. 4 B.C.E.-6 C.E. Æ prutah (14 mm, 1.60 g, 6 h). Jerusalem. ΗΡ-ω/Δ-Ο-[Υ], upright anchor with wide arms / ΕΘ/ΑΝ in two lines within wreath. TJC 69b; Hendin 1193; RPC 4913. A nice example struck on a large flan. Olive green-brown patina. Extremely fine.

From an American Collection of Biblical and Related Coinage.

Herod Archelaus, eldest son of Herod the Great and at this time Ethnarch over Judea, Idumea, and Samaria, is mentioned in Matthew 2:13-23. He is likely also the ruler who sailed in the Parable of the Pounds/Minas in Luke 19:11-27, a reference to Archelaus' journey to Rome to plead before Augustus.
