Judaea, First Jewish War. 66-70 C.E. Æ prutah (17 mm, 2.37 g, 6 h). Year 2 (67/8 C.E.). 'Year two', amphora / 'The freedom of Zion', vine leaf on branch with tendril. TJC 197; Hendin 1360. Dark green and brown patina. Very fine.

This coin was struck in the disastrous second year of the Jewish Revolt against Rome. In this year Vespasian crushed Jewish resistance in the Galilee at the cost of some 100,000 Jews killed or sold into slavery. The defeated leaders of the northern revolt, John of Giscala and Eleazar ben Simon, then fled to Jerusalem with their followers, which swelled the population of the city and led to a Jewish civil war, while the Romans planned their next moves to destroy the rebels.
