Description
Parthian Kingdom. Phriapatios to Mithradates I. Ca. 185-132 B.C. AR drachm (20 mm, 3.76 g, 12 h). Hekatompylos. Diademed and draped bust of Mithradates I left, wearing bashlik / BAΣIΛEΩΣ MEΓAΛOY APΣ-AKOY around, archer seated right on omphalos, holding bow. Sellwood 10.1 (Mithradates I); Shore 12-13 (Mithradates I); Sunrise 254 (this coin). Minor porosity. Lightly toned. Very fine.
From an American Collection of Biblical and Related Coinage.
Mithradates I captured the Seleukid king Demetrios II, whom he held safely in captivity until Antiochos VII attacked Parthia. Demetrios was then released, returning to Syria and serving a second reign.
