Description

Kidarites. Uncertain king. Ca. late 4th-early 5th centuries A.D. AR drachm (26 mm, 3.96 g, 3 h). Taxila or vicinity. Pseudo-legend, diademed bust of the Sasanian king Varhran IV right, wearing winged mural crown with korymbos / Fire altar; flanked by two attendants, each wearing mural crown with korymbos; pseudo-legend at sides. Cf. SNS III type Ib1/3, pl. 33, A1 for prototype; Göbl pl. 6, VII, 4. Toned. Good very fine.

The Kidarite Huns conquered Taxila, an important trading center on the Silk Road, around A.D. 390, and immediately proceeded to strike coinage in imitation of Sasanian coins in circulation in the region. This type copies a drachm of Varhran IV, who became Sasanian king in A.D. 388.
