Description
ANTIQUITIES, Moche IV Mountain Scene. A superb Moche IV Sacred Mountain scene from Peru, ca. 450 - 550 AD. This 6" high Northern style vessel features a seated Apu, depicted holding a small feline on a leash. Apus are the mountain spirits who control the rains and play an extremely important role in assuring fertility. His hand rests protectively on the shoulder of a warrior, who appears to have succumbed in ritual combat. The figures are nicely detailed and shown surrounded by several serpents with feline heads, curled over and around the mountain peaks. Intact, a nice example of a sacred scene with only minor surface deterioration. Ex private East Coast collection.
