Description

A choice Narino polychrome pedestal bowl from the Piartal cultural complex, Colombia, c. 750 – 1250 AD. This wonderful vessel is 8” in diameter and is decorated with stylized geometric bird forms, merged with butterfly patterns and integrated into a star design representing Venus, all symbolic of ancient fertility motifs. Even the exterior of this one is painted with an intricate star design. Cf. Labbe “Colombia Before Columbus”, page 166. Museum deaccession. Value range: $450 - $550
